The Nigerian Senate, on Tuesday, called for the appearance of the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, her Defence counterpart, Dan Alli and the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Goodwin Emefile, for authorising the disbursement of $462m without the approval of the Senate.
This is sequel to a point of order raised by Senator Samuel Anyanwu (Imo East), citing sections 80, 3, 2 and other extant laws which prohibited the federal government from authorising such amount of money without the content and approval of the National Assembly.
According to Anyanwu, the said amount was authorised and withdrawn from the government’s cofers sometime March 2018 for the purpose of purchasing helicopters from a company known as Helicopters Techno Flight, USA, without approval of the Senate and without being appropriate for.
“Mr. President, I want the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Defence and the CBN Governor to appear before this Senate and explain why the sum of $462m was authorised from the federation’s account without due approval from us”,Anyanwu said.
The deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over Tuesday’s plenary, therefore, referred the matter to the Senate Committee on Appropriation, to summon the public officers concerned and report back to the Senate within one week.
