A police Sergeant identified simply as Emmanuel Timothy has been reportedly shot dead by his colleague named Corporal Bala Adamu over a girlfriend they were allegedly both in love with.
The officers attached to the Adamawa State Police Command were said to have got into an argument over the lady and in the heat of the disagreement, Corporal Adamu shot Sergeant Timothy with his service rifle.
According to the State Police spokesperson, Othman Abubakar who confirmed the incident, Sergeant Timothy died after he was rushed to a hospital on Tuesday, January 30, 2018.
Abubakar who briefed newsmen on the incident said the two officers were together at a bar in Madagali Local Government Area of the state when an argument erupted between them over the lady said to be the Corporal’s girlfriend when he shot his superior officer in the heat of anger.
An eyewitness reportedly told the police:
“They had a hot argument on Tuesday over one alcohol seller who is a girlfriend to Corporal Adamu. She had complained that late Sergeant Timothy did not pay a N100 bill for his drink.
He initially took a shot of a local gin and demanded another shot. This situation provoked Corporal Adamu, who warned Sergeant Timothy to be careful with his utterance to his girlfriend or he would be dealt with mercilessly.
From what we gathered, the two of them had laid claims to the girl.
And true to his words, Corporal Adamu cocked his rifle and shot Timothy, killing him on the spot and causing pandemonium,” the witness said.
When contacted, the police spokesperson said the officer shot his colleague over a minor disagreement over the girlfriend whom the late Sergeant also laid claims to.
Abubakar told newsmen:
“Reports from the area indicated that it was on Tuesday morning at about 11am11 amen Corporal Bala Adamu and his colleague late Sergeant Emmanuel Timothy attached to 13 Squadron Police Mobile Force, Makurdi, on special duties in Madagali, engaged each other in a hot argument that resulted to the Corporal killing the Sergeant with his rifle.
The Corporal has been arrested while the corpse of the slain officer had been deposited at the Yola Specialist Hospital Mortuary.
The case has been referred to the Criminal Investigation Department, CID, at the state headquarters and investigation has commenced.”
