A civil servant in Kogi State, Mrs. Husenat Mohammed, has returned a sum of N1.7m wrongly paid into her account.
Mohammed, an accountant with the state’s Teaching Service Commission, was in the market last Friday when an alert on her mobile telephone indicated that N1.7m had been into her bank account.
Mohammed, who has spent 17 years in the state civil service, said she put a call across to her husband, also government employee, Mr. Yakubu Dauda, who instructed her to return the money immediately.
When asked if she returned the money as a result of pressure from the husband, Mohammed said ‘no’, adding that her personal conviction and her husband’s encouragement were the reasons why she returned the money.
Although Dauda had not been paid salary for 17 months, the couple said they never nursed the idea of keeping money that did not belong to them.
“Besides, as an accountant, I knew that it was a mistake which would be detected at a later date, coupled with the fact that my religion does not permit me to take what does not belong to me,” she said.
Dauda said he was not surprised by his wife’s action, adding that she was raised well.
“I thank God for the kind of woman God has chosen for me, even though I have not been paid in the 17 months, I can never take something that does not belong to me,” he said.
