Following the reported death of Sergey Mavrodi, founder of MMM Pronzi scheme from which some three million Nigerians were said to have lost N18bn, some of the scheme’s victims and other Nigerians have taken to their Twitter handles to share how they feel about the passing. The MMM founder died at age 62.
Russian-born Mavrodi was taken to a city hospital in Moscow from a bus stop overnight Monday, March 26, after he felt weakness and pain in the chest area. “The emergency team has failed to save his life. He died this morning,” Russian media reported.
Below are some of the tweets from Nigerians reacting to the development…

@newscantell: “Someone said Sergey Mavrodi died because he was afraid of Nigerians coming to Russia for world cup in June. Man just had to die of heart attack. He wasn’t a great man but he allowed us know which Nigerian bank is fast and reliable. I can’t forget the MMM drama.”
@ezrelaja: “Sergey Mavrodi is dead! The Man died with my MMM money! May his soul not rest in peace.”
MMM became fully operational in Nigeria in 2016. It was embraced by some Nigerians and seen as a quick money-making venture. They ignored warnings by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, NDIC, previous records and religious bodies to Nigerians to desist from investing in the Ponzi scheme.
When the system crashed for unknown reasons in 2016, a total of N18billion was thrown into the sea resulting in the death of many. Despite plans to revive the business in 2017, it yielded little success.
