NRC reverses self, to let train services continue despite upsurge in COVID-19 cases

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) said on Saturday all train services would continue contrary to earlier announcement that it had suspended services because of coronavirus pandemic in the country.

The NRC Deputy Director of Public Relations, Mr. Yakub Mahmood, had said in an earlier statement that all train services would be suspended from Monday.

In the statement titled: “NRC Stops All Passengers Train Services,” Mahmood said the decision by the corporation’s Board was aimed at curbing the spread of coronavirus.

However, in another statement issued on Saturday night, the NRC spokesman said the corporation had reviewed the situation and opted to continue the provision of passengers’ train services.

He said: “Further to the earlier statement, the board and management had reviewed the situation and decided to provide passengers train services.”

The statement, however, listed the conditions that passengers must fulfill before they would be allowed to board trains.

“Passengers must provide full names, addresses, dates of birth and means of identity before they can board the train. The passengers have been enjoined to cooperate with any other measures put in place by the management to protect themselves from contracting the pandemic,” the statement added
