One person was killed and one other sustained injury in a road accident along the Igbariam axis of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway in Anambra State.
The incident happened Sunday when a speeding Sienna bus collided with a packed faulty truck.
The Anambra State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the crash.
A statement by Charles Iyiegbuniwe, FRSC’s public education officer in the BBstate, said the vehicles involved were a Benz truck 1513 (registered as UKP381ZU) and a green Sienna belonging to Liveth Vatten Ltd (registered as KRD429AG).
He said the crash affected a total of 10 individuals – seven males and three females.
Iyiegbuniwe quoted a witness, Mr Rufus Chime, as saying that the driver of the Sienna bus was travelling at high speed and failed to notice the stalled truck ahead.
“When he realized the situation, he attempted to manoeuvre but was unable to control the speed, leading to the collision with the truck.
“The injured was swiftly taken to Toronto Hospital by bystanders before the arrival of the FRSC rescue team while the deceased was transported to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital’s mortuary in Amaku, Awka,” he said.
The Sector Commander of FRSC Anambra State Command, Adeoye Irelewuyi, extended condolences to the deceased’s family and urged drivers to prioritize safety measures.
He emphasised the importance of using caution triangles and reflective tape to alert other vehicles in case of a breakdown.
