Kano assembly by-elections are currently scheduled for ten political parties.
This was revealed at a meeting of stakeholders in Kano by Ambassador Abdu Zango, the Kano State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC).
He stated that ten registered parties have submitted nominations to the commission for the elections in the local government areas of Ungogo and Kano Municipal.
The APC, ADP, AAC, PRP, Dennis Labour Party, APGA, Good Party, Labour Party (LP), Action Alliance (AA), and NNPP are the parties.
Zango clarified that although state-level nominations were made, party national office is uploading candidates’ information via INEC’s web platform.
Ten political parties had submitted nominations as of the deadline. He stated, “The uploading process is still in progress, and INEC headquarters will only confirm the final number of candidates once the process is finished.”
In order to monitor party primaries in the impacted areas, he continued, INEC sent out monitors from its national headquarters and reported no issues.
Zango stated that INEC has not received any official notice or court order impacting party leadership or primaries regarding internal party conflicts, particularly within the NNPP.
As far as we know, there isn’t a court order. The law and findings from properly supervised primaries serve as INEC’s rigorous guidelines, he stated.
Voters were reassured by the REC that by-election preparations are well underway. With more than 535,000 registered voters and more than 1,000 voting places, he said, the elections will take place in two constituencies in Kano Municipal and Ungogo.
INEC promised sufficient personnel and logistics to ensure a seamless voting process and encouraged eligible voters in the impacted areas to cast ballots.
