The authorities of the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army (NA) have detained two soldiers who were allegedly involved in a controversial armoured cable theft at the Dangote Refinery in the Ibeju-Lekkj area of Lagos State.

It was gathered that the soldiers were arrested by a team of vigilantes and guards attached to the refinery.

The authorities of the 81 Division expressed deep concern over the alleged implication of their personnel in the reported theft case at the Dangote Refinery.

Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, stated in a statement that the army high command found the act of criminality unacceptable and contrary to the values of the Nigerian Army.

He said a preliminary investigation conducted by the army revealed that the two suspects were hired by a civilian contractor simply identified as Mr Smart.

Nwachukwu said the contractor claimed that he wanted to recover some armoured cables which he left behind on the refinery’s premises.

He further said that unknown to the soldiers, the said contractor, sensing trouble as they approached the security post, excused himself from the vehicle and bolted, leaving them behind.
