SUPER Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala will take no further part in the ongoing 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco due to injury.

The Nigeria Football Federation announced today that the Barcelona striker sustained a serious injury during Monday’s opening Group C clash with South Africa in Rabat.

“Sad news from @NGSuper_Falcons camp: Top striker @AsisatOshoala is out of the ongoing #WAFCON2022,” the NFF tweeted today.

“She sustained a Grade 2 Medial Collateral Ligament strain in the game against South Africa.

“She is due back in Spain on Thursday. Get well quick Asisat!”

A grade 2 MCL tear is described by the Cleveland Clinic as ‘a moderate tear in which your MCL is partially torn — usually the superficial part of your MCL. Your knee will likely be loose when it’s moved by hand, and you’ll probably have intense pain and tenderness along the inner side of your knee.’

The clinic says it takes four to six weeks for an athlete to fully recover from the injury.

The Barcelona star suffered an early knock in the 2-1 defeat to Banyana Banyana, but she appeared to shake it off and continued after receiving medical attention.

However, she struggled throughout the game before she limped off with just six minutes left.

The 27-year-old has had a running battle with injuries this year, missing key games for both Barcelona and the Super Falcons.

Incidentally, Oshoala was announced today as one of the nominees for the African Women’s Player of the Year along with 29 others.

She has won the award four times, including that last one in 2019.
