Some corps members at Ikeja I, Local Government area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, have been denied their monthly clearance by officials of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for not registering with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as ad-hoc staff.

According to some of the affected corps members, NYSC officials at the local government adopted a ‘no INEC slip, no clearance’ policy on Thursday.

They were subsequently denied opportunity to submit their biometrics for the November clearance.

The development has, however, forced corps members serving in the local government to forge INEC slip for N500 in a bid to be cleared for November.

INEC recently unveiled a portal for the recruitment of ad hoc staff for the 2023 elections.

Ad hoc staff include supervisory presiding officers, presiding officers, assistant presiding officers, registration area technicians, and registration area centre managers.

In a letter to all resident electoral commissioners (RECs) signed by A.T. Yusuf, INEC acting secretary, said the commission said the online portal for applications will open on September 14 at 8am and close on December 14 at 8pm.

Eddy Megwa, the public relations officer of the youth service scheme promised to investigate the ugly development.
