1.8m children out of school in Borno – Govt
The Borno State government has revealed that there are 1.8 million out-of-school children in the state, a situation, which it described as worrisome.
The Commissioner for Higher Education, Abba Wakibe, who revealed this during the opening ceremony for the training of At Risk Children-Programme (ARC-P) of 968 Youth Facilitators’ in Borno State held in Maiduguri on Monday, stressed that insurgency had greatly affected the education sector, including the enrollment of children and manpower.
He said “We have 56,000 orphans and 49,000 widows, but the number of fatherless children still remains unknown. It is our sincere hope that this programme will reduce the number of out-of-school children in Borno”.
In her remarks, the Coordinator of (ARC-P), Inna Galadima, explained that a total of 968 facilitators had been selected across 27 Local Government Areas of the state for three weeks training to equip them with required skills., adding that the programme would drastically reduce the number of out-of-school children in the state.
