Nigeria will be looking to end their winless run when they take on World Cup-bound Portugal tonight (Thursday, November 17, 2022) at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

La Selecao, on the other hand, will be hoping to wrap up their Qatar 2022 World Cup preparation in style by beating the three-time African champions, who will be playing for pride as they are not part of the Middle East football party, having lost the qualifier playoffs to Ghana, Portugal’s World Cup Group opponents.

The Super Eagles are yet to win a friendly match since new boss Jose Peseiro took over the team after their World Cup qualifier heartbreak.

Match Preview

This is the first time Nigeria and Portugal meet at the senior level.

Lorient striker Tarem Moffi is expected to lead the attack for Nigeria in the absence of Napoli’s talisman Victor Osimhen.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed that the star attacker, alongside Orlando Pirates defender Olise Nda has been ruled out of the clash after suffering injuries while in action for their respective clubs.

The absence of Osimhen would no doubt weaken the Nigerian attack force. But the absence of Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo would delight the Nigerian defence led by the skipper, William Troost-Ekong.

After Wednesday’s training, Portugal head coach Fernando Santos said Ronaldo would not recover in time for the friendly against Nigeria.

The Ballon d’Or winner had trained the previous two days with the Qatar 2022 World Cup-bound squad but missed the final training for the friendly.

The Portuguese attack would now likely be led by the duo of Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix and AC Milan’s Rafael Leao.
