At least 10 persons have been reportedly killed and several others injured in a shooting at a Walmart in Chesapeake, Virginia, on Tuesday night.

The police confirmed on Wednesday that the shooter was among the dead, and this comes just days after a gunman killed at least five people and injured 25 at a Colorado LGBTQ nightclub.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, the Virginia Police public information officer, Leo Kosinski, said it has not been established if the shooter died of self-inflicted injuries.

Although the police have not provided any details about the shooter, there are several speculations that he was a manager at the store.

Kosinski noted that police responded to a report of a shooting inside a Walmart at 10:12pm, adding that “less than 10” people were killed but declined to give the exact number.

He further said that he was not aware of any shots being fired at police.

The City of Chesapeake said “We’re only a few hours into the response, so we don’t have all the answers yet”. “We do know there are multiple fatalities plus injuries and the shooter is confirmed dead.”

Walmart also said in a statement early on Wednesday that it was “shocked” at the shootings at its Chesapeake store, adding that it was working closely with law enforcement.

A spokesperson for Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, which has the area’s top trauma center, confirmed that five patients were being treated over there.

Reacting to the shooting in a tweet on Wednesday, Virginia senator, Mark Warner, said “Sickened by reports of yet another mass shooting, this time at a Walmart in Chesapeake. I’ll be monitoring developments closely”.
