Iran recorded their first points at the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Qatar after claiming a late dramatic victory over Wales in their second Group B game on Friday.

Iran who came into the game from their opening 6-2 defeat to England left Wales who held USA to a 1-1 draw in their opener on the the brink of elimination from their first finals in 64 years.

The first half ended goallessly. But with less than 10 minutes of regulation time remaining, Hennessey floored Mehdi Taremi as the striker bore down on goal. Although referee Mario Escobar initially gave a yellow card, it quickly became red after a short consultation with the pitchside monitor.

As the match looked edging towards a stalemate, substitute Rouzbeh Cheshmi struck a brilliant drive from 25 yards into the corner beyond the outstretched hand of replacement goalkeeper Danny Ward. The goal was a massive blow for Rob Page and co, and Ramin Rezaeian secured the win with a delicate chip over Ward on the counter attack in the 98th minute.
