The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, has confirmed the arrest and detention of popular singer, Oladipo Daniel Oyebanjo, better known as D’Banj.
TheNigerian News reported that the Koko Master was arrested and detained Tuesday after ICPC operatives closed in on him, forcing him to surrender himself at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
Confirming the arrest in a statement on Wednesday, ICPC spokesperson, Mrs. Azuka Ogugua, said the musician was arrested over the investigation of fraud associated with the N-Power Programme.
The agency’s mouthpiece said “the Commission had received numerous petitions on the diversion of N-Power funds running into billions of naira following the approval and release of such funds to the beneficiaries by the Federal Government”, noting that “many N-Power beneficiaries had complained over the non-receipt of the monthly funds despite payment by the Government.”
She pointed out that the commission had sent a series of invitations to D’Banj to appear before a team of investigators but they were ignored and not honored.
She said the singer, however, turned in himself and was taken into custody at the ICPC Headquarters on Tuesday, 6th December, 2022, and “is currently assisting the investigators to unravel the circumstances of the fraud allegations by the petitioners.”
Ogugua added that “the investigation is ongoing and the Commission prefers not to preempt its outcome and also avoid the frenzy of a media trial.”
