Taraba Assembly elects new Speaker
The Taraba State House of Assembly has elected the member representing the Zing constituency, John Kizito Bonzina, as the new Speaker, following the resignation of Joseph Albasu Kunini on Wednesday.
Kunini was elected on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019.
The lawmakers were taken aback by Kunini’s resignation letter, which he read on the floor of the House, as there was no form of conflict among the members of the House.
The former speaker said “My resignation is on personal grounds. I wish to thank honourable members for their support and cooperation while I served as the speaker of this honourable House”.
While speaking after his emergence as the new speaker, Bonzina denied the allegation that a palace coup was staged by the members to remove the speaker from office.
While soliciting the support of his colleagues, he promised to work round the clock to build on the achievements of the former speaker.
Although no actual reason was given for the former speaker’s resignation, his quest to stand solidly behind the parliamentary workers who have been demanding for their unpaid seven years outfit allowances was said to have necessitated his resignation as plans to impeach him were allegedly ongoing.
