Only constitutional amendment can stop govs from controlling LG funds – Bagudu

Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State has declared that the governors would continue controlling local governments funds until Section 7 of the Nigeria constitution is expunged.

The governor made this known on Thursday while signing the N166.985bn 2023 state budget into law at the Government House Chambers in Birnin Kebbi, stressing that the call for local governments autonomy is very “fundamental but conflicting” because section 7 of Nigeria constitution must be amended before they could be granted autonomy.

Governor Bagudu revealed that for local government autonomy to sail through, all state assemblies must agree for the National Assembly to amend section 7 of the constitution.

He further stated that his administration is not against local government autonomy as has been insinuated in some quarters.
