Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate and Labour Party leader, has firmly rejected the idea of joining any political alliance aimed solely at unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential elections. Obi made this declaration during a national conference on strengthening democracy, held on January 27, 2025, in Abuja. He emphasized that his primary concern is not political power but the future of Nigeria and the strengthening of its democratic institutions.

Obi stated that his focus remains on addressing the pressing challenges facing Nigeria, such as poverty, education, healthcare, and overall governance. He stressed that it is critical for political leaders to move away from power struggles and instead prioritize the needs of the people. For Obi, discussions should be centered on how to improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians, rather than engaging in coalitions that serve only to shift power.

“I’m not interested in any coalition for the purpose of taking power. It is about discussing Nigeria. How do we care about securing the Nigerians? How do we care about our children being in school? That is the most important thing for now,” Obi said.

Obi also expressed his growing concern over the current state of democracy in the country. He pointed out the deep socioeconomic issues, such as the widespread poverty affecting millions of Nigerians, which he believes undermine the true essence of democracy. According to Obi, democracy cannot thrive if it fails to address the fundamental needs of the population. He called for a focus on governance that prioritizes the welfare of the people, rather than the political ambitions of a select few.

During his address, Obi also praised Ghana’s Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for his commitment to democratic values. Bawumia’s early concession in Ghana’s election was cited as an example of true democratic principles. Obi stated that Bawumia’s actions helped reinforce Ghana’s reputation for stability and respect for the people’s will.

At the conference, Obi urged Nigerian leaders to go beyond ceremonial elections and work toward building strong institutions that foster good governance, accountability, and justice. “Democracy must address the needs of Nigerians. We must build institutions that uphold accountability and fairness,” Obi concluded. His remarks reflect a call for a greater focus on governance and development, rather than political maneuvering for the sake of power.

This marks a clear distinction in Obi’s political philosophy, which aligns more with a vision of democratic progress and institutional reform than with any specific political alliance.
