2027: Calls for Tinubu to Pick Me as Running Mate Misplaced – Senator Barau

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has dismissed recent calls urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to select him as his running mate for the 2027 general elections, describing the agitation as premature and unnecessary.

In a statement issued on Tuesday through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, Senator Barau called on the Northern Nigeria Progressive Youth Assembly (NNPYA) and other groups making the demand to halt their campaigns. He urged them to focus instead on supporting President Tinubu’s administration in delivering on the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“My attention has been drawn to various posts on social media and in some national dailies by groups, including the Northern Nigeria Progressive Youth Assembly (NNPYA), urging our leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to pick me as his running mate come 2027. This is out of place at this moment and not in our best interest,” he stated.

Barau, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, emphasized that the priority for all Nigerians should be the success of the current administration. “If you are truly my supporters, please desist from this unnecessary clamour and join the train to restore the glorious days of our country under the able leadership of President Tinubu,” he appealed.

The senator reaffirmed his commitment to the president’s vision and called on citizens to rally behind the government’s policies, many of which he said are already yielding results. “President Tinubu is genuinely committed to turning around our country’s fortunes. Let us support him in delivering his programmes for the benefit of all Nigerians,” he added.

The statement comes amid growing political discourse surrounding the 2027 elections, particularly concerning Vice President Kashim Shettima’s future on the ticket.
