2027: Datti Baba-Ahmed Opens Up on Presidential Ambition, Reaffirms Loyalty to Peter Obi

Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, has spoken candidly about his potential participation in Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race, stating that he might consider running—but only under specific circumstances.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Tuesday, July 22, Baba-Ahmed made it clear that his political choices are not driven by personal ambition. He said he would only consider entering the race if both Peter Obi and an unnamed southern political figure decline to run.

“I religiously supported Peter Obi and would do so again. Unless the two individuals I deeply respect decide not to contest, and God paves the way, only then will I consider stepping forward,” he stated.

The politician also addressed speculations about his possible defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He confirmed that while he met with the Julius Abure-led Labour Party faction on July 21, he remains committed to the LP. “I have yet to be convinced to leave the Labour Party,” he said, adding that any decision to change platforms would require strong justification.

Baba-Ahmed shared his views on the emerging opposition coalition, which includes key figures like Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and David Mark. While recognizing the political weight of the group, he stressed that many within it are eyeing the presidency.

He dismissed circulating rumours suggesting he had distanced himself from Obi, insisting that any such claims are false. “There is clear electronic evidence of my support for Obi,” he added.

Meanwhile, Peter Obi has confirmed his intention to contest the 2027 election, quashing reports of a possible alliance with Atiku Abubakar under a new platform.
