FCT, Abuja — Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant, Dele Momodu, has criticised Labour Party chieftain Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed over his comments against Atiku Abubakar’s interest in contesting the 2027 presidential election.
Baba-Ahmed, who was the Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 election, had argued that Nigeria needs a new generation of leaders and questioned Atiku’s repeated attempts at the presidency since his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) days.
Reacting to the remarks, Momodu stated that age does not diminish leadership ability, vision, or the right to personal ambition. He questioned Baba-Ahmed’s criticism of Atiku, a former Vice President of Nigeria and founder of the American University of Nigeria.
In a post shared on his X handle on Friday, January 9, 2026, Momodu posed several questions, asking whether old age disqualifies anyone from being visionary, whether age should bar personal aspirations, and whether Atiku prevented Baba-Ahmed or Peter Obi from contesting previous elections.
He further asked what makes Baba-Ahmed better qualified than Atiku, noting that both men own universities and that Atiku has served as Vice President of Nigeria. Momodu added that Atiku’s long-standing political experience, established structures, and strong voter base should be acknowledged rather than dismissed.
Momodu concluded that personal ambition remains a fundamental right in a democracy and that age alone should not be used to discredit any aspirant.
