Party chieftain and former Board of Trustees Chairman Bode George has acknowledged that deliberate attempts are underway to obtain a southern presidential candidate amid mounting anxiety over the PDP’s (Peoples Democratic Party) zoning structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
In an interview, George disclosed that the party is secretly forming an alliance around reputable southern leaders who might represent the PDP against President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
“That process of getting a Southerner as presidential flagbearer of the party is on,” George reportedly said.

“There is no shutdown in politics. This week, we have a meeting that could be a make-or-break situation.
Although George and other Southern PDP leaders support moving the presidential ticket to the South, some members of the National Executive Committee are still against it, claiming that the party should put electability and internal cohesion ahead of regional concerns.
While acknowledging the zoning disputes, George emphasized the value of tact and timing in identifying possible candidates.
“Arrangements are already underway, and there are quite a few respectable, responsible, and morally upright individuals who have been tried and tested,” he stated.
However, it is too soon to start naming people. You’re going to get into problems if you do it now.
The event coincides with the PDP’s internal turmoil when former Vice President Atiku Abubakar left and a new opposition coalition led by the African Democratic Congress emerged.
