2027: PDP Nullifies Cross River Congress, Sets Up Caretaker Committee

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dissolved the Cross River State Congress and authorized the establishment of a Caretaker Committee to manage the party’s operations in the state.

Debo Ologunagba, the party’s national publicity secretary, made this claim in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

Ologunagba clarified that the choice was made in accordance with the party’s 2017 amendments to the constitution.

In a separate letter, PDP National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu said that the Cross River congress would go ahead as scheduled on September 27, despite the fact that National Chairman Umar Damagum notified the Independent National Electoral Commission on September 25 about the postponement of the congresses in Cross River, Plateau, and Kebbi States.

Ologunagba explained that although some people gathered in Calabar on Saturday, there was no congress in the state.

The NWC’s decision to form a Caretaker Committee in the state comes after the State Executive Committee of the Cross River State Chapter’s term ended, having been elected four years prior, the party’s spokesperson noted.

Beginning on Wednesday, October 1st, 2025, and lasting no more than three months, or until a new State Executive Committee is elected in the State, the Caretaker Committee will oversee the Party’s operations in Cross River State.

Bassey Joseph, the acting secretary, and Bassey Eko Ewa, the chairman, make up the Cross River State PDP Caretaker Committee. Udie Mike, Lynne Bassey, Etim Okon, Ankot Cohbom, Ofana Raphael Odo, Onun Inyang Unoh, Ebaye Akunjom, Godswill Obindim, Agabi Dominic Oko, Walter Nandi Esom, Ekpo Asuquo, Victor Erig Takon, and Joe Ekpe Edet are among the other members.

“The NWC urges all leaders, important stakeholders, and hordes of our Party members in Cross River State to stay united and keep cooperating for the Party’s advancement,” the statement read.
