2027: Tinubu Fears Only One Candidate, Says CUPP, Alleges Plot to Block Him From Contesting

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has accused the Tinubu administration of growing increasingly concerned about the rising political momentum of Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 elections.

CUPP National Secretary, Peter Ameh, made the allegation during an interview on Monday, stating that the coalition’s findings indicate that the presidency views Obi as the most significant challenger capable of unsettling its political ambitions.

Ameh insisted that the information did not result from speculation but from research, consultations, and data gathered from multiple regions. According to him, internal discussions within government circles reportedly show that Obi’s popularity remains a major source of anxiety for the ruling party.

He pointed to the frequent online criticism of Obi by presidential aide Bayo Onanuga as evidence of this concern, arguing that no other potential aspirant receives similar attention from government-aligned sources.

“We collect data, conduct engagements, and review political behaviours. From all indications, the only candidate the government does not want to face on the ballot is Peter Obi,” Ameh said.

He added that other expected contenders, including Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi, do not attract the same level of focus from the presidency.

Ameh also cited Obi’s strong outing in the 2023 elections, including his victory in the Federal Capital Territory, as a major reason he is now considered a formidable force ahead of the next presidential race.

He concluded that the administration’s alleged efforts to undermine Obi reflect rising political tension as the 2027 election cycle approaches.
