The Ogun State Police Command says it is on the trail of some suspected armed robbers who killed a guard in the Ologede community in the Atan area of Ogun State.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, disclosed this on Wednesday while reacting to an enquiry about the incident by our correspondent.
TheNigerian Metro reported on Wednesday that the suspected armed robbers had killed a security guard who was guarding a mini carpark in the area while absconding with a truck parked in the park during the midnight invasion.
A resident of the community who pleaded anonymity had told our correspondent on Tuesday that a food vendor who sells on the premises of the park discovered the lifeless body of the guard who was hacked and tied to a corner.
The food vendor was said to have raised the alarm, thereby drawing the attention of other community members.
Upon the arrival of the park owner, it was discovered also that a truck parked on the premises.
The source told our correspondent that the guard, who had always loitered around in the community, was recently employed by the park owner to secure the facility in a bid to assist him.
The source said, “There was a robbery incident at a private park in our area. The robbers killed the guard of the park. They hacked him and tied him to a corner. The place used to be a mechanic workshop before it was abandoned and the owner had allowed people to use it as a park.
“A truck parked on the premises was also stolen by the robbers. It was a food vendor who sells on the premises that discovered the lifeless body of the guard and raised the alarm. Police officers from Atan came there and took the body to the Ilaro Hospital Morgue.”
Confirming the incident, Odutola noted that the community’s chairman reported the incident to the Atan Police Division.
She said that upon receiving the report, police operatives visited the scene and found the body of the deceased with severe head injuries and what appears to be a suspected murder and armed robbery.
Odutola said, “On 28/11/2024/ at about 0600, the Chairman of Ologede Village reported to the station that at about 2200 hours on 27/11/2024, he had been informed of a corpse estimated to be around 40 years old, lying in a pool of his blood along the entrance to the community.
“Upon receiving the report, a team of detectives visited the scene, where they found the body lying face up with severe head injuries. Photos were taken and the body was removed to the General Hospital Mortuary in Ilaro.”
She concluded that a preliminary investigation had commenced into the matter while the police were making efforts to apprehend the perpetrators.
“Preliminary investigations are underway and efforts are being made to track down the perpetrators of this heinous act,” Odutola concluded.
