The 12th edition of Idoma International Carnival has opened in Otukpo, headquarters of the Otukpo local government area of Benue State, with displays of music, culture, and tradition.

The four-day annual event tagged the largest street party north of the Niger with the theme “The Rhythm of Our Heritage,” promises an unforgettable experience, organisers said.

Welcoming guests to the occasion, founder of Idoma International Carnival, Chief Edwin Ochai, said culture, in all its forms, is the lifeblood of the people’s identity.

He stated that culture is the rhythm by which people live, and it is expressed through clothing, food, customs, and tradition.

He said in an age where the world is ever more interconnected, it is crucial to preserve and celebrate the cultural legacy that makes a people.

“The idea of the Idoma International Carnival was born in 2013, not out of vanity, but from deepening responsibility to preserve and showcase the vibrant culture of the Idoma people. Our mission has always been twofold: to safeguard the rich heritage of the Idoma Nation for future generations and to use this cultural platform to expose our land to investment and growth opportunities. What began as the Agila Social and Economic Carnival has evolved into the spectacular Idoma International Carnival we now celebrate,” Ochai said.

He further stated that the carnival has become a powerful celebration of the Idoma people, with a positive impact on the local economy in the State.
