The Osun State Police Command has arrested the driver of a truck heading to a quarry in Obaagun Community in Osun State, who crushed to death a boy said to be running errands for his father.
A resident of Obaagun, who was close to the scene when the accident happened, but preferred anonymity for security reasons, said the father of the deceased, a baker, had sent him to buy fuel.
He further explained that the boy was already approaching a filling station when the truck hit and killed him on the spot.
It was further learnt that displeased residents ran after the truck immediately after the accident occurred and seized the driver.
“He the (driver) was nearly lynched by the mob as he attempted to flee the scene. The boy was going to a filling station to buy fuel for his father when he was hit by the truck going to the quarry.
“The father of the deceased is a popular baker in the community. The truck was coming from the Ikirun end and heading towards a quarry in Obaagun.
“But not long after the accident, some operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps came around and rescued the driver,” the resident further said.
When contacted on Sunday for further details about the accident, the Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC, Osun Command, Kehinde Adeleke, said the operatives rescued the driver and handed him over to the police.
She also said, “The accident occurred Saturday evening. Aggrieved youths in Obaagun attempted to lynch the driver involved in the incident.
“However, officers and men of the corps intervened promptly, preventing the act. The driver has since been handed over to the Nigeria Police, Ifelodun Division.
“The deceased has been buried, and normalcy has returned to the area. The accident occurred at the Marvelous Junction, Obaagun. A truck, believed to be coming from Ikirun to a quarry in Obaagun hit and killed the boy. The deceased was sent by his father to purchase fuel.”
