A head-on collision in Niger State has left no fewer than eight farmers dead in a road accident involving a Toyota Corolla and a tanker trailer.

The incident occurred at 8 pm on Monday night around Batati/Lanle Road and heading to Kutigi in Lavun Local Government Area of Niger State. The speeding Toyota Corolla was trying to overtake another vehicle when it ran into an oncoming tanker trailer heading to Lagos State to load fuel.

TheNigerian Metro gathered that all the victims were farmers who migrated from Niger Zone B over the insecurity in the area to Dasu village in Lavun Local Government Area of the state to continue their farming activities.

A source who did not mention his name saying he was just on the road when the accident happened, said all the victims were men of different age brackets and expressed shock over the way the deceased were crushed by the trailer.

“It was a horrible sight. All the victims were crushed beyond recognition. The road safety corps has to caution these passenger vehicles about speeding and overtaking on the roads,” he said.

The Assistant Commander of Road Transport Employee Association of Nigeria, Kutigi branch, Mohammed Sanusi, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent, said it was a head-on collision between the two vehicles leading to the accident.

“I was shocked when I saw the way the bodies looked in the crushed vehicle. Tears ran down my eyes uncontrollably. May God Almighty forgive them their shortcomings,” Sanusi said.

According to him, it was the efforts of the Federal Road Safety Corps officers, the Red Cross and the Road Transport Employee Association of Nigeria who assisted to evacuate and retrieve the bodies. He said all the victims were buried in Dasu village on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, at the time of filing this report, no official statement had been issued by the Niger State government, the Nigeria Police and the FRSC.
