‘Govt Has Abandoned Us’ – Benue Community Cries Out As Bandits Kill Seven Traders In Fresh Attack

In a recent attack at Yanriwa Market in Benue State’s Kwande local government area, armed bandits reportedly killed five traders and injured seven others.
It was discovered that the armed attackers stormed the market around 3 p.m., when traders were conducting business, and began firing haphazardly, killing five people.

Lawrence Akerigba, a member of the town, told Leadership Newspaper that the federal government broke its pledge to send more security personnel to the communities following the 2024 Christmas Day attack, which murdered over 20 farmers.

He stated that the herders had blocked the Anwase road, where the Christmas attack and killings occurred, and that “as I am talking to you, that road is no longer passable.”
According to Akerigba, the herdsmen’s activities have forced the closure of most schools, churches, and markets in the area.

He stated, “Until today, nothing of that type has been done. The government has abandoned us to our fate.

“The herdsmen attacked at 3 p.m. in Liev 1 at Usambe, Ikyurav ya.

“However, the joy of selling turned violent when ranchers stormed the market while people were buying and selling and began shooting at them.

“Five people were murdered on the scene, and seven others were injured and sent to the hospital. Some other persons remain missing, and the search is still ongoing.

“The security men on the ground are trying so much to prevent the attacks, but because they are few in number, their efforts are not much felt.”
