Father of Kogi Photojournalist Allegedly Killed By Correctional Officer Dies In Lokoja

James Aiyepeku, father of Kogi photojournalist Ayobami Aiyepeku, who was allegedly murdered by a Nigeria Correctional Service officer—has died in Lokoja, after the suspect reportedly took his own life, deepening the tragedy that has shaken the state.

James’s death comes just weeks after Ayobami was gruesomely murdered on 24th July 2025. The prime suspect, Adebayo Pelumi, reportedly lured Ayobami to a residence along Government Residential Area in Lokoja, where the killing took place.

The remains of Ayobami were discovered along Zone Eight Road in Lokoja a day after Pelumi allegedly committed suicide in a hotel in the city.

Arise News has learned that the trauma of Ayobami’s death severely affected James’s health, as he was one of the family’s main breadwinners.

The killing of Ayobami Aiyepeku has sparked widespread outrage in Kogi State. Friends, family, and civil society groups are demanding justice for the slain journalist.
