Breaking: Paul Biya Re-Elected as Cameroon’s President
Despite accusations of vote fraud by the opposition, President Paul Biya has been declared the winner of Cameroon’s presidential election, extending his reign to a record eighth consecutive term.
Biya, 92, was declared the winner of the country’s contentious election by the Constitutional Council on Monday, solidifying his status as the oldest head of state in the world. As a result, Biya, who has been in charge since 1982, will continue to do so until 2032.
Opposition leaders, however, have strongly rejected the proclamation. Biya’s primary opponent, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, had earlier declared himself the victor, claiming that the official outcome would be “tainted” and “not reflective of the people’s will.”
