For a critical National Executive Council meeting, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called chairpersons and other figures from its university chapters across the country to Abuja.
Sunday Punch reports that the meeting will take place today, Sunday, at the University of Abuja’s Festus Iyayi Building.
According to sources, a few NEC members and union zonal leaders had already arrived in Abuja prior to the conference.
The meeting on Saturday in Abuja was confirmed by a senior member of the union’s NEC, who talked to Sunday Punch under the condition of anonymity due to a lack of media clearance.
The NEC member clarified that leaders would receive updates on the state of continuing discussions between ASUU leadership and the administration.
Bringing branch leaders up to date on negotiations, budget talks, and welfare issues impacting public institutions is the main goal, he continued.
The NEC insider also disclosed that the union would decide at the meeting table whether to go ahead with a strike.
“The leadership from different universities will meet and we will make the final decision,” the NEC member stated. The Federal Government’s terms and conditions must be reviewed. We will be able to decide once we are briefed because our members already have a position.
“We’ve given the government ample time to explain, or rather, correct, their earlier stances. The execution of the Nimi Briggs Committee findings has not altered ASUU’s stance.
