A member of his family verified on Friday that the remains of Venerable Edwin Achi, an Anglican priest from Kaduna who passed away while being held captive by kidnappers, have been placed in the mortuary of St. Gerard Catholic Hospital, Kaduna.
Although no burial date has been set, Achi, a cleric in the Anglican Diocese of Kaduna who is from Ukwani Local Government Area, is anticipated to be buried at his birthplace of Umaaja.
The family source, who spoke to Punch under condition of anonymity, revealed that plans to transport the priest’s remains home were moving forward.
“His corpse is at the morgue as we speak,” the source stated, clarifying that he was not permitted to discuss the issue in public. We are getting ready to bring his remains home for their last resting place.
“The church is making every effort to bring the body home, but no date has been set yet.”
On October 28, 2025, gunmen broke into Venerable Achi and his wife’s home in Nissi Village, which is close to the Kaduna Refinery.
After being transported to an unidentified location, the family was later contacted by kidnappers who demanded an astounding ₦600 million ransom.
However, the bishop revealed the devastating news a few days later. The diocese called his passing a sad blow in a statement that was shared on its official Facebook page.
The church said, “The Venerable Edwin, who was kidnapped alongside his wife on October 28, 2025, has been confirmed dead.” The diocese, clergy, and Anglican family were all devastated by the death.
