A Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver has been arrested by the Lagos State Government in relation to the death of Elizabeth Fresh, a pedestrian who was hit by a large bus at Airport Junction in Ikeja.
The deadly collision involving a bus run by the Red and White Bus Operating Company in accordance with its regulations happened on Friday, January 9, 2026, according to the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, or LAMATA.
The driver first fled the scene but was eventually located and turned over to the police, according to a statement acquired on January 12, 2026, and signed by the agency’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi.
The statement stated, “Eyewitness accounts confirmed that Miss Fresh was struck by a high-capacity bus, which has since been identified as part of the Red and White Bus fleet.”
According to LAMATA, it sent condolences to the victim’s family right away.
According to reports, the family insisted on the driver’s capture and prosecution.
The statement went on, “The authority assured the family that it was working closely with the bus operator to ensure the driver’s identification, arrest, and handover to law enforcement for appropriate legal action.”
In the presence of the firm’s management, the bus company presented the driver on Monday and formally turned him over to the police at the Domestic Wing Police Station, Murtala Muhammed International Airport, in accordance with official regulations.
LAMATA described the event as a regrettable loss and reaffirmed its dedication to accountability and safety in all transport services that fall under its purview.
The statement read, “As a responsible agency of the Lagos State Government, LAMATA is deeply saddened by the loss of any life and remains dedicated to maintaining safety and accountability across all regulated transport services.”
Additionally, the authority cautioned that failing to use designated pedestrian bridges when crossing BRT lines continues to put lives at danger.
In order to stop such incidents and improve commuter safety throughout Lagos, LAMATA reiterated its commitment to working with transportation providers, law enforcement, and the general public.
