Rivers Bye-Election: PDP, LP, ADC Have No Candidates — Electoral Commissioner Yomere

The forthcoming bye-elections for Khana Constituency 2 and Ahoada East Constituency 2 in the Rivers State House of Assembly will go on, according to Professor Gabriel Yomere, the State’s resident electoral commissioner.

According to him, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party, and African Democratic Congress (ADC) will not field any candidates in the February 21 Rivers bye poll.

This was confirmed by Yomere during a press session.

Speaking about election preparations, he pointed out that a mix of procedural and internal party issues is to blame for these political titans’ absence.

For over two years, the two Assembly seats have been unoccupied.

Dinebari Loolo’s death in September 2023 left the seat for Khana Constituency 2 vacant, and Edison Ehie’s resignation in December 2023 to take a position as Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Governor left Ahoada East Constituency 2 vacant.

Voters in the impacted constituencies now have a long-awaited chance to choose their MPs as twelve candidates from seven smaller political parties are competing for the open seats.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has completed all logistical preparations to guarantee a seamless election, Professor Yomere informed the populace.

Additionally, he emphasized the commission’s dedication to legitimacy by emphasizing that all Supervisory Presiding Officers (SPOs) are permanent INEC employees rather than Corps members.
