Heavy Security Deployed as APC Begins Ward Congresses in Benue

As the All Progressives Congress (APC) began holding its ward congresses in the state’s 23 local government areas on Wednesday, a high level of security was observed throughout Benue State.

The purpose of the activity is to choose new delegates and ward executives for the party’s next congresses.

Governor Hyacinth Alia enabled the security arrangement, which was intended to guarantee a smooth and peaceful process, according to Benjamin Omale, the party’s state chairman.

He pointed out that sufficient security guards had been stationed around the state to guard against disturbances and protect the party members taking part in the drill.

The Chairman of the Ward and Local Government Congress Committee, Auwalu Ishaye, oversaw the distribution of crucial electoral materials at the Makurdi party secretariat as early as 7 am, according to Daily Trust.

Speaking to party officials prior to the exercise, Ishaye advised all parties involved to behave appropriately in order to ensure a smooth process and expressed trust in the people’s calm disposition.

Omale had earlier urged electoral officers to maintain discipline and order, emphasizing the importance of closely adhering to rules set forth by the party’s National Working Committee.

He restated that in order to guarantee that the congresses were held without any problems, the state administration has increased security in each of the 23 local government areas.

According to reports, James Ornguga, the State Organising Secretary, clarified that the ward congresses will yield 10 delegates, five for the state congress and five for the local government congress, in addition to 27 executive committee members in each ward.

He said that the national electoral committees of the party had been sent from the national headquarters to the state chapter to oversee the procedure.

He claims that the committees consist of a ward and local government congress committee, a screening committee, a screening appeal committee, and an appeal committee to resolve conflicts.

According to Ornguga, the distribution of materials followed the screening committees’ certification that the state was prepared for the exercise.

Ornguga was cited by the media as saying, “Today, they will elect the ward executives as well as five delegates for the state congress and another five for the local government congress.”

He was hopeful that the exercise would be calm, pointing out that there were single candidates for the majority of the seats, which decreased the possibility of fierce competitions.

Ornguga went on to say that the procedure was anticipated to smoothly introduce new ward systems throughout the state, with security bolstered and party loyalists remaining composed.
