State Police: ‘Governors Can Be Exposed and Embarrassed’ – Itse Sagay

If established, Nigerian governors may be stopped from exploiting state police, according to Itse Sagay, SAN, the former chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC).

Recall that in order to boost the fight against insecurity, President Bola Tinubu recently instructed the Senate to start discussing a constitutional amendment that would allow state police.

In an interview with ARISE Television on Friday, Sagay clarified that Nigerians and civil society organizations would fiercely oppose state governors who try to misuse the state police.

Sagay asserts that if governors misuse their authority under the state police system, they risk being exposed, humiliated, and perhaps prosecuted.

“The state governor should have overall control over the state police,” he stated. Since he is the state’s chief security official, that is required.

Furthermore, I think that Nigerian civil society is now so powerful that state governors would face severe opposition if they misuse their authority.

“I’m not at all concerned about that. Given the character of Nigerian politicians, I am aware that there may be some abuse, but I believe they can be restrained.

“If they misuse the authority granted to them by the state police system, they risk exposure, humiliation, and legal action.”
