Amidst the party’s leadership turmoil, former vice president Atiku Abubakar has responded to rumors that he may leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In an interview with BBC Pidgin, Atiku said he was still devoted to the party and that defection was not necessary.
According to Atiku, the party thinks the courts would acknowledge David Mark’s leadership.
“We think the trial court will resolve the case as soon as possible, even before Congress,” he stated. Although we are not attorneys, we are optimistic that David Mark’s leadership will be upheld by the court.
Atiku emphasized that ADC has built institutions and substantial investments, making defection unnecessary, when asked about joining other political parties because of the crisis.
A few of the parties lack formalities. Since ADC is a coalition of the movement we founded around a year and a half ago, a significant amount of appropriation has gone into it. We are committed to finishing the legal process and carrying on with our work,” he said.
In response to the prospect of losing the ADC presidential ticket, Atiku said, “We have agreed… we are all leaders,” characterizing the party as a coalition of leaders that includes formidable candidates like Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso.
The former vice president’s remarks coincide with the ADC resolving internal conflicts in front of the general elections in 2027.
