Sumner Sambo, the political editor at Arise News, has warned that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) may be going too far with its political strategy before the next elections.
Sambo, who spoke on The Morning Show on Monday, warned the party not to be too sure of itself, pointing out that the last general election was very close.
He said that the APC’s current strategy could backfire and that it would be bad for the party’s political strategy to assume that it would win the next election easily.
He says that the APC’s strategy seems to have unintentionally pushed opposition figures to work together on a common platform.
He talked about important opposition leaders like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, whose supporters, he said, got results that were very close to those of President Bola Tinubu in the last election.
Sambo said that the best political strategy for the presidency would have been to keep the opposition groups split up so that they couldn’t come together.
Sambo said, “I just want them to not be too sure of the political process.” I think it would be bad politics for them to be sure that the President will win, because if you look at the results of the last election, they should not be sure. I think the APC is overthinking things and pushing their luck too far.
“I mean, if you’re not overthinking things, tell me how you would be a very good political strategist and then let all of your opponents who got a lot more votes than you in the last general election be in one political umbrella, one political platform.
“I thought that the best thing President Tinubu could do for politics was to make sure that the Peter Obi group, the Atiku group, and the Kwankwaso group all stay where they are.
It may seem like President Tinubu will have an easier time getting home, but whatever politics the presidency and the APC-led federal government are playing that have caused all the opposition to come together and be on the same platform, including the smaller parties that don’t want to join forces, they are all thinking about joining forces against the APC.
“I think the APC has gone too far. I think President Tinubu has done a good job of handling politics, but if he’s not careful, it could hurt his numbers in the next election.
“Because if you look at how close the numbers were, you’ll see that President Tinubu barely made it through the last elections. And I don’t think he would have let all of these people and groups come together like this.
“I’m thinking that the tactics are getting too far out of hand.” That means APC strategists need to rethink their plans and not be too sure of themselves.
