Rotimi Amaechi, who used to be the Minister of Transportation, has said that he does not agree with the idea of choosing the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election by consensus.
The former Governor of Rivers State said in an interview with Channels Television on Friday that the people should be able to choose.
He did say, though, that he is willing to back whoever wins the ADC presidential nomination, but he would rather the party hold a primary election.
Amaechi made his point clear in response to a statement made earlier by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who said that the ADC would first look into the possibility of choosing its flagbearer through a consensus.
He said, “I will support him if he wins, but I don’t agree with those who say consensus candidate.” Let’s go out and talk to people. They can choose who they want to be in the party.
“There needs to be a primary election in the ADC.” People who say there should be a consensus candidate are wrong.
Amaechi said that zoning is an internal process of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and should not be binding in modern times. This is in response to the zoning agreement between the North and South.
The former Governor also said that being younger than the other candidates for president gives him an edge because the job needs someone who is still capable.
“Atiku is very qualified to be president of Nigeria. He has the right to run, but he should know that this zoning thing is a PDP thing. I don’t agree with this south, north, whatever. What I do agree with is that the most qualified candidate should be allowed to govern or be elected.
“I’m the youngest person running for office right now; I’m 60. The others are all in their 70s. He said, “This thing needs capacity.”
