Ibrahim Shekarau, a former governor and senator from Kano State, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because he wants to change his political strategy.
Shekarau wrote a resignation letter on April 19, 2026, to the PDP Chairman of Giginyu Ward in the Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State. In the letter, he said that his departure would take effect right away.
He wrote, “Please accept this letter as notice that I am resigning from my position as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) effective today.”
The ex-minister said the decision came after a lot of discussion within his political group, which suggests that he is about to switch parties.
Shekarau said, “This decision comes after a lot of discussion within my political group about moving our political career to a different party.”
He thanked the party leaders at the ward level and said, “I thank you for being a good leader, and I pray that Allah will continue to guide you in your stewardship.”
The letter was also sent to the PDP Chairmen of Kano State and Nassarawa Local Government Area, which shows that all party members were officially notified.
