Four National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and two others died in a tragic road accident involving a military gun truck and a commercial bus in Adamawa State.
The Adamawa State Police Command said that the deadly accident occurred on Wednesday at the Narehi area of Girei Local Government Area on the Girei-Song Road.
In a statement, Suleiman Nguroje, the command’s spokesman, said the “accident involved a military gun truck on the way from Gombi to Yola and a commercial Hummer bus carrying five passengers from Yola to Mubi.”
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision, after which the commercial bus somersaulted and burst into flames,” Nguroje said.
“Preliminary findings show both vehicles were involved in a head-on collision, causing the commercial bus to flip over and burst into flames,” the statement said.
It said all the five passengers aboard the Hummer bus were burnt to death after the vehicle caught fire following the collision, stressing that preliminary identification showed that four of the deceased were serving NYSC members posted to Adamawa State.
The victims have been identified as Suleuman Juliet and Usman Shuaibu, both from Kaduna State, while efforts are ongoing to identify the rest of the victims.
The command also confirmed that a military personnel attached to the gun truck died in the accident and that the corpses have been evacuated to the Specialist Hospital, Yola. It said efforts were ongoing to identify the remaining bodies and locate their families.
The Adamawa State Commissioner of Police has sympathised with the families of the bereaved, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the NYSC and all those touched by the tragedy.
