Julius Abure, a factional national chairman of the Labour Party, has warned the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership not to give former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and his followers too much power.
In response to allegations of disputes over the distribution of elective seats within the NDC, Abure made the comments in a statement released on June 8, 2026.
Based on the Labour Party’s experience during and after the 2023 general election, the chairman of the Labour Party claimed that the NDC leadership, led by Senator Seriake Dickson, had made a necessary decision in refusing to provide all political positions sought by Obi’s followers.
Abure claimed that instead of supporting the party’s expansion, a number of political office holders who rose to prominence on the Labour Party platform ultimately turned against its leadership.
It’s said that history often repeats itself. Abure stated, “Senator Dickson and Co. have seen their trajectory and learned from what happened to us.”
He claims that a number of lawmakers who profited from the Labour Party’s agenda later sided with Obi and got embroiled in disagreements over the party’s leadership.
Prior to the 2023 elections, Abure asserted that the leadership of the Labour Party made a number of compromises, including catering to Obi’s and many of his supporters’ interests.
We gave tickets to the majority of his followers based only on his body language. We thought we were investing in those people, so we gave away the majority of the tickets for free,” he said.
Additionally, after winning elections on the LP platform, Abure accused several elected officials of supporting attempts to overthrow the party leadership.
He declared, “Obi took all those elected under the party to fight the party leadership.”
Abure maintained that in order to maintain internal stability, political parties should maintain a balance in the allocation of posts and power among its members.
Seriake Dickson should be commended for not providing Obi supporters with all they required in the NDC. In order to have individuals who will stand up for him when things become tough, he had to bring his own people, he continued.
The chairman of the Labour Party also charged that the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, was responsible for the leadership crisis that developed within the party following the 2023 elections. He claimed that certain party leaders had accepted allegations that the tenure of the party’s executives had expired.
According to Abure, “the leaders, especially Peter Obi and Alex Otti, decided to take over the leadership of the party.”
He insisted that inquiries from the public regarding the Labour Party’s handling of its connection with Obi and his followers during the 2022–2023 election period prompted his remarks.
