Yunusa Tanko Says Peter Obi Accounted for Every Campaign Expense

Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, has said that the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, is the only candidate that has accounted for campaign spending.

Tanko was reported to have said this on Tuesday during an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Day Break’.

Obi, he said, was different because he always demanded accountability and transparency.

He said: “I was there when Aisha Yesufu and Peter Obi hired an independent auditor to look into their campaign finances.

“They made a full statement of all the money spent in the campaign. I’d like to see the same level of transparency from other major parties, APC and PDP – I think the INEC is doing a good job.

“Peter Obi was the only candidate who stood out because he was committed to accountability and transparency which he always preached during the campaign.

“So he made sure that those accounts were rendered to the public and I think it’s a public document and will be accessed by everybody.”

Meanwhile, Peter Obi has expressed concern over the increasing loss of confidence in Nigeria’s public institutions, saying the development is affecting trust in governance, the judiciary and the economy.

Earlier fear Obi had about the controversy surrounding the removal of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen Obi took to his 𝕏 page to reflect on.

The former governor of Anambra State at the time said he feared the situation could give a wrong message to the international community about the independence and strength of Nigeria’s institutions.

The Federal High Court ruling that ordered the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress and some other political parties further erodes public confidence in the legal system and should be reviewed, Obi said.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate said the country should not weaken its institutions for political reasons, adding that countries are stronger when institutions are more powerful than individuals.

He wrote: “The federal High Court Judgement ordering the de-registration of the ADC and other political parties is just one of those activities that further reduces the common man’s trust in our legal systems” he should be reversed.

“I promise to restore the dignity, independence and integrity of the Judiciary. There has to be a voice for the common man. Legal uncertainty and intimidation must not be allowed to threaten the business community. Justice should be accessible, equitable and respected by all.

This is the time for our judges, legal luminaries, senior advocates and lawyers. “Get up, defend the rule of law, take back your country!”
