THE lawmaker representing Delta North, Peter Nwaoboshi, has defected to the All Progressives Congress, days after his suspension from the People’s Democratic Party.

Nwaoboshi was welcomed to the APC today by President Muhammadu Buhari.

This was made known by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu in a statement titled ‘President Buhari congratulates Sen. Peter Nwaoboshi for decamping to APC’.

The statement read, ‘President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday in Abuja welcomed Sen. Peter Nwaoboshi to the All Progressives Congress, after he left the Peoples Democratic Party, saying ‘you are welcome to the progressives family.’

“Sen. Nwaoboshi, representing Delta North District, Delta State, was presented to President Buhari and National Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee at the State House by Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege.

“The Deputy Senate President said Senator Nwaoboshi’s decision to join the APC clearly shows that the effort of the CECPC was yielding fruit. The Senator was warmly welcomed by party members.”

The State Working Committee (SWC) of PDP had suspended the Senator for a period of one month for alleged anti-party activities on Wednesday.

PDP spokesman in Delta State Dr Ifeanyi Osuoza, in a statement, noted that the action was necessary “against the backdrop of the recent romance with an opposition party, verbal recklessness and unprovoked utterances of the lawmaker, particularly against the person of the state governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa.”

But Nwaoboshi in a statement on Thursday stated that the action of the party at the state level was satirical, hurriedly done, and a laughable caricature.

“Curiously, this irrational, laughable, illegal and unconstitutional action of this bunch of alarmingly, anti-democratic forces masquerading as the State Working Committee is against the principles of fair hearing as enshrined in the Nigerian constitution, a document that supersedes all other documents,” Nwaoboshi said.

“Notwithstanding any other provision relating to discipline, no Executive Committee at any level, except the National Executive Committee, shall entertain any question of discipline as may relate or concern a member of the National Executive committee, Deputy Governors or members of the National Assembly provided that nothing in the constitution shall preclude or invalidate any complain submitted through the.

“By these provisions, the State Working Committee has demonstrated complete undemocratic and anti-constitutional behavior which has rendered their uncharitable suspension null and void and of no consequence whatsoever.”

Senator Nwaoboshi added that the action of the PDP to suspend him was against the principles of fair hearing.
