At the scene of a crude oil leak in Bodo, Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State, two boys were being watched by gunmen when they were shot and killed.
Apparently destroying nearby farms and rivers, the spill came from a pipeline owned by a large corporation.
A source identified as Celestina said, “These kids had been ordered by the community to keep watch over a recent oil leak site until investigations into the cause of the incident and repairs on the affected pipeline were finished.
The teens were ambushed by some gunmen at around two in the morning on August 26. Two of the victims died, while others were injured by gunshots.
Confidence Deko, the chairman of the Gokana LGA, confirmed the incident in a statement and said that security personnel were alerted to prevent a potential breakdown of law and order.
“Yes, we were aware of it, and we contacted the security services, including the Joint Taskforce to that community,” Deko responded.
They told us that two people had been slain, and they confirmed it. And we’ve urged them to find the perpetrators of this heinous act.
The LG announced that he had called a meeting of the community’s elites to go over and examine the problems there, while pleading with the people to maintain their composure.
When reached, Grace Iringe-Koko, a spokeswoman for the State Police Command, verified the occurrence and provided a brief update by adding, “Investigation is ongoing.”
