Lauretta Onochie, the former social media assistant to former president Muhammadu Buhari, called the recently concluded Edo State governorship primary election held by the All Progressives Congress (APC) a disgrace to the party.
Onochie bemoaned the fact that a few corrupt men had taken over the APC and were now dictating who leads the organization.
Three candidates were selected in the primary election to choose the APC’s nominee for governor in the upcoming election.
Dennis Idahosa was proclaimed the winner of the primary election by Chairman of the committee, Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, while Senator Monday Okpebholo was declared the APC candidate by Returning Officer Stanley Ugboaja.
On Sunday, the situation worsened when Anamero Dekeri emerged victorious in the governorship primary held on Saturday.
According to one Ojo Babatunde, who claimed to be speaking for all of the local government return officers, Dekeri received 25,384 votes to win the race.
Onochie, however, stated in a post on X: “APC must be different.” The shameful actions of our APC in the Edo State Primary, from which four candidates have now emerged, have me feeling incredibly embarrassed, ashamed, and scandalized.
For crying out loud, we are Progressives! This is the result of a few corrupt men seizing control of a political party and dictating the nominees, removing the people from that position.
Why is the APC so determined to maintain the South South as PDP territory? PDP operatives in the APC make sure that the party fields a weaker candidate who has no chance of defeating the PDP nominee each time we have the chance to field a victorious candidate. It took place in Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Delta, and Bayelsa.
“To provide Nigerians in general and South South Africans in particular with a respectable alternative to the corrupt PDP, @OfficialAPCNg needs to reclaim our party from traders and collaborate with core progressives in the area.
“As of right now, when I compare the two political parties, the APC seems less like the Progressive Party and more like the PDP.
In conclusion, I think it is detrimental to the APC for women to be barred from leadership positions as they currently exist. It is guaranteed that women will not be fairly represented in the party when men nominate women to be the National Woman Leader and State Woman Leaders. One hand cannot be used to clap.”
