Public affairs commentator, Farooq Kperogi, has claimed that former First Lady Aisha Buhari was no longer married to the late President Muhammadu Buhari before his passing.
Kperogi made the assertion on Wednesday via a post on his verified Facebook page, while reacting to reports that Aisha had claimed her late husband asked her to seek forgiveness from Nigerians on his behalf.
According to Kperogi, Aisha had reverted to her maiden name, Aisha Halilu, before Buhari’s death, indicating that the couple had been divorced.
“I can’t verify the authenticity of that statement, but what I do know is that before Buhari’s death, he and Aisha were no longer married. They had divorced, and she resumed using her maiden name, Aisha Halilu,” Kperogi wrote.
He also pointed to several public clues to support his position, including her absence from Buhari’s relocation to Daura, her reported hesitation to visit him in London during his illness, and her delayed presence during his final days.
“Even when he fell ill and there were suggestions that Aisha travel to London to care for him, she reportedly hesitated because they were no longer married,” he added.
Kperogi expressed skepticism about the statement attributed to Aisha Buhari regarding Buhari’s apology to Nigerians, asking:
“When and where did Buhari supposedly tell her to apologise to Nigerians? Where did she even say this?”
The claim has stirred reactions online, as neither the Buhari family nor Aisha herself has confirmed or denied the divorce allegation.
