Alkasum Abba Rejects GDP Figures: ‘Nigerians Are Starving Like Never Before Since 1960’

Alkasum Abba, a well-known professor from Nigeria, has criticized the administration of President Bola Tinubu for the increasing suffering that Nigerians are experiencing.

The university administrator asserted in an interview with Trust TV that the president has done more harm to the economy than he did in 2023.

Alkasum emphasized that despite the present administration’s reform goal, the cost of living has continued to rise.

“President Tinubu claimed to have inherited a bad economy, but he has made it worse,” he remarked.

“What the government claims to have accomplished is not the reality. Visit the market; living expenses have increased. The level of transportation has increased.

“Now, if you are a pensioner, you cannot purchase gas to fill up your tank with your pension funds.”

According to the DAILY POST, President Tinubu stated in the Independence Day broadcast that Nigeria’s tax-to-gross domestic product ratio should be celebrated because it has increased from less than 10% to 13.5% as of September 2025.

Prof. Alkasum Abba, however, claimed that the figure is useless when Nigerians are starving while bemoaning the country’s economic woes.

“You tell us that GDP has increased, but what good is GDP while I’m hungry?

People are starving. Since gaining our freedom, we have never been in this predicament. It’s better to refer to it as famine rather than hunger.

“What should I do with the economy that you claimed to be reforming? When I’m starving, what do I care how much we have in foreign reserves?

“When I’m looking, you come and make me sicker, and you say, ‘Don’t worry, I’m just helping you stabilize.'” Will I get over it after I’m dead? He asked.
