APC Cross River Chairman Impeached Over Alleged Financial Misconduct

Barr. Alphonsus Ogar Eba, the chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State, has been impeached by the State Working Committee (SWC) due to accusations of financial impropriety and administrative excess.

The APC state secretariat in Calabar was the site of the action on Thursday.

Eba was accused of embezzlement, misappropriation of party finances, haughtiness, and failing to provide party officials with stipends after he was appointed chairman in October 2021 under previous governor Ben Ayade.

According to a statement signed by SWC members, chapter chairmen, and other interested parties, Eba’s actions had severely damaged party operations and frayed ties throughout the state.

The Forum of APC Chapter Chairmen had previously demanded his impeachment, accusing him of hurting the welfare of ward and chapter officials and delaying stipends for more than three months.

State Welfare Secretary Okara Ekawu made the motion to remove him, and State Treasurer Dr. Matthew Egom seconded it. They claimed that before making a unanimous conclusion, the committee looked into the claims in great detail.

Eba was instructed to transfer all party assets and records, including secretariat management, to the acting chairman until the National Executive Committee (NEC) issued additional directions.

In breach of Sections 21:2 (ii & v) of the APC Constitution, Forum Chairman and Boki LGA Chairman Kelvin Nyong called the nonpayment of stipends “unprecedented” and charged Eba with dividing the party.

The party leaders in attendance reiterated their support for Governor Bassey Otu and stated that stability and efficient administration required the shift in leadership.

About two years prior, Eba had encountered similar resistance when prominent members of the party, including as Chief Peter Higgins and former presidential adviser Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, demanded his dismissal due to similar accusations.

By planning a lavish airport welcome for former governor Ben Ayade and publicly pledging allegiance to him last month—a gesture perceived as disparaging the current administration—he caused uproar.
